General Pilates FAQ
What is Pilates? Pilates is a type of exercise developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates. Pilates emphasizes a mind-body connection while focusing on a total control of your body. Low impact by design, Pilates builds a deep mind-body connection by focusing on your core, breath, and strength, and stability.
What is a reformer? A reformer is a Pilates-specific piece of exercise equipment. It's basically a spring-loaded bed. Springs come in different weights, which you can adjust to increase or decrease the intensity of resistance. The reformer also has two hand straps and a foot bar. Here's how it works, generally (there are so many different ways to use a reformer!): You lie in your back and put your hands in the straps and/or your feet on the foot bar. Weighted springs are attached to the carriage. You push or pull away, creating resistance during a Pilates exercise, and the bed slides smoothly on wheels. There are so many ways to use the reformer!
How is Pilates different from yoga? or strength training? The main difference between Pilates and Yoga is that there is no direct spiritual practice in Pilates. If you love the flow + stretchy bits of yoga with the intensity of strength training or weigh lifting, you're bound to enjoy Pilates. Everything is stretching while we strengthen and there is a big emphasis on stability & control.
What are the benefits of Pilates? Pilates is low impact by design, so it's perfect for all ages and skill levels. Doing Pilates can improve core strength, flexibility, coordination, stability, and coordination. Pilates can also help improve posture and reduce back pain. Pilates focuses on improving the mind-body connection using breath and focusing on core and strength. It's a total work out, targeting muscles all over your body.
How long does it take to see results? Joseph Pilates said, "You will feel better in ten sessions, look better in twenty sessions, and have a completely new body in thirty sessions."
I have a back (or other) injury, can I still do Pilates? Yes! Pilates is great for folks with back injuries. In fact, Pilates is often used in physical therapy. Pilates can help with back pain by strengthening and improving core function, flexibility, and posture. A strong core supports the entire body, spine included. Be sure to notify your instructor of any injuries or pain you have, so they can customize your Pilates session.
Can I do Pilates while pregnant? Pilates can be very beneficial for expecting mothers. Pilates focuses on core and back strength, which is beneficial for supporting a growing baby. In addition, Pilates also strengthens pelvic floor muscles, which is useful for childbirth and recovery. In addition, Pilates can be helpful for balance and stress issues.
